Our park was founded in 1955 as the first Little League baseball park in South Bend. Since then we have gone through many changes. Beginning with only Boys 12 Under Baseball, we have since added Boys 10U Baseball, Girls Softball ages 6-18,Boys 13-18 Baseball and finally Boys and Girls Tee Ball ages 4-5. We now offer 5 Diamonds (2 Lighted) on over 20 acres.
Insurance is provided through Babe Ruth Baseball Charter in association with K&K Insurance, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Teams are chartered with Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, although many games are played with independent area teams.
The volunteers at Matthys are here to serve the Youth of the South Bend Area, teaching not only the fundamentals of Baseball and Softball but also life skills. Getting to practices and games, being on time, respecting teammates, coaches, opponents and others. We welcome and encourage diverse backrounds to play together and have fun in our park.
We are pleased to join forces with Career Academy South Bend. Our park has become their home field for baseball and softball teams. They are a great addition to the atmosphere at Matthys.
Mark was lifelong player at Matthys Baseball. He was a very good baseball player but more importantly a great young man! Mark began playing baseball with Matthys Tee Ball, played Minors also Majors age 11-12, then Junior and Senior League Baseball ages 13-17. We miss Mark and he is always in our thoughts and prayers.
A Message From Mark’s Parents, Mike and Diane Mayfield:
He was a kind, gentle, humble son, uncle, friend, teammate and classmate to many, many people who love him and miss him dearly. Mark had an undetected heart condition (ARVC) and collapsed while playing intramural basketball at New Prairie High School. We encourage young people to get heart screenings. They can save lives and spare loved ones from the loss we are suffering.
